“Faith Seeking Understanding”
With Fr. John Greene
This program evaluates the "truth claims
" of the Gospels, that Jesus did miracles, claimed to be the unique and only-begotten Son of God, etc. The show is hosted Fr. John Greene, a priest in the AMIA
. The show’s premise is the way to begin that evaluation shouldn't be that these things conflict with reason. The starting point in evaluating outlandish claims such as these in real life is, "What does the person making the claim have to gain by making the claim?"
In the case of the Gospels and the rest of the New Testament, the answer is that, from an earthly perspective these men stood to gain nothing and lose everything, including their very lives, by making these claims. Read what Paul gained by persisting in his ministry, "Are they servants of Christ? I am a better one—I am talking like a madman—with far greater labors, far more imprisonments, with countless beatings, and often near death. Five times I received at the hands of the Jews the forty lashes less one. Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I was adrift at sea; on frequent journeys, in danger from rivers, danger from robbers, danger from my own people, danger from Gentiles, danger in the city, danger in the wilderness, danger at sea, danger from false brothers; in toil and hardship, through many a sleepless night, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure."
Would anyone endure such things for a lie?
